Year 5 Owls

Welcome to Owls

Class Teacher: Miss Winfield
Learning Support: Miss Purnell

We’ve made it to the final half term of the year! It’s been a busy and productive time so far, and there’s still plenty to look forward to in the weeks ahead.

English This half term, our English focus is on recount writing, specifically reflecting on life in Year 5 to inspire the next class. We’ll explore different sentence structures using adverbials, craft double -ed opening sentences, and use the perfect form of tense to enhance our writing skills. The children are sure to enjoy creating thoughtful and reflective pieces.

Reading Each week, we’ll continue our dedicated Reading sessions using the I read, we read, you read model to build fluency and comprehension. These sessions help us to analyze texts and deepen our understanding through discussion and comprehension activities. While Year 5 pupils won’t have reading diaries, regular reading at home—independently or with an adult—is still expected and encouraged.

Mathematics In Maths, we’re now developing our understanding of decimals and negative numbers, as well as expanding our knowledge of units of measurement. We’ll continue to strengthen our use of the four operations, with a particular emphasis on problem solving. Daily activities and Flashback Fridays help us revisit key concepts, including times tables and arithmetic.

Times Tables Times Table practice remains a priority, both in class and at home. All children have access to TTRockstars to support their learning—please encourage regular use at home.

Wider Curriculum In Science, we’ll delve deeper into life cycles, making connections with our PSHE unit on safety and the changing body. Our Art lessons will explore the bold and iconic work of Andy Warhol, where we will experiment with screen printing techniques. In History, we’re starting our final topic on Richard III, including an exciting trip to the visitor centre in Leicester to bring our learning to life. We’ll also be getting creative and entrepreneurial by taking part in enterprise activities for the upcoming summer fair, where students will plan, set up, and run their own stalls.

Homework

· Spellings are given out on Fridays and tested the following Friday. These cover a range of words from across the Primary Curriculum.

· Additional Maths and English homework will also be distributed on Fridays and is due back the following Thursday.

· Homework Club runs on Thursday lunchtimes for any children needing extra support or time to complete tasks.

PE will continue on Wednesdays (Gymnastics) and Fridays. Please ensure children come to school in the correct kit on these days: black bottoms, a white top, and their school jumper/cardigan.

We’re looking forward to a fantastic final few weeks filled with learning, creativity, and celebration!
