Getting Ready for School
Helping Your Child Prepare for Starting School at Home
Preparing for the transition to primary school can feel like a new challenge, especially for families whose pre-school children would usually be attending childcare before starting school. Supporting your child at home during this time is important, and there are many simple, enjoyable ways to help build their confidence and independence.
BBC Bitesize – Starting Primary School offers a wide range of helpful resources designed to support early learning while making the transition to school fun and engaging. These activities can help your child develop key skills, routines, and independence in preparation for starting school.
How to Talk to Your Child About Starting School
Although plans may feel uncertain at times, this does not need to affect how you talk to your child about starting school. Children are often more resilient than we realise and do not need to be aware of changes to usual routines.
Keep conversations positive and simple, for example:
“We’re waiting to hear when you’re going to start school – isn’t that exciting?”
Starting school is an exciting milestone for both children and their new school. We are very much looking forward to welcoming your child and supporting them as they begin their school journey.
