Enabling children to flourish and succeed

Building Character at Measham CE Primary School

Character Education is an important part of the curriculum at Measham CE Primary School. As a Church of England school, we nurture and celebrate our core values from the Christian faith to help guide us in the decisions we make in life. Our teaching uses the school's six core Christian Values of Hope, Peace, Respect, Thankfulness, Forgiveness and Love as the foundation building character.

We have discussed with the children the most effective behaviours needed to ensure that they will be successful in school and in life. We have created a bank of character vocabulary that it is easy for all children to understand and is progressive across the school.

We start building character in EYFS and teach the children to use different character traits as they move through the school. The aim is to encourage the children to focus on developing the character 'muscles' that they use the least.

For example, a child might be great at TEAMWORK, but might need to improve their FOCUS.

Children are taught to use their character 'muscles' and are praised in school for demonstrating and practising these behaviours.

We firmly believe this will help them in a wide variety of scenarios in later life, preparing them well for the next stage of their education.
