Year 5 Owls
Welcome to Owls
Class Teacher: Miss Winfield
Learning Support: Miss Purnell
This half term is a short, but learning packed few weeks. I'm sure you’re all ready.
Please remember that expectations are higher again this year. There are only a few weeks until the children will be in Year 6. I know the children will more than meet these expectations by doing it… ‘’Better than you have to…’’
In English, we are working towards writing a review of different books to capture audiences. This will be a carefully crafted discussion text that I’m sure the children will enjoy creating. We will achieve this by honing our skills on multi-clause sentences and developing our use of parenthesis with brackets, dashes and commas.
We will have a dedicated Reading session each week where we follow the pattern of I read, we read you read, which helps with fluency by re-reading the same passages and words. We work to analyse the text and the key information which then leads into comprehension questions surrounding the text to increase our understanding. Children will not be having a reading diary in Year 5 but it is still expected that children are reading independently at home or with an adult.
Our Mathematics learning will now look at our understanding of Shape, including a focus on angles, polygons and 3D shapes. We will also consolidate some of this learning when we begin to explore position and direction – developing knowledge of coordinates and translating shapes. We will regularly recall our previous learning in our morning activities, including times tables, arithmetic and on our ‘Flashback Fridays’.
Times Table practise is still just as important, and we will still continually do lots of work with this in school but additional practise at home is expected. All children have access to TTRockstars to help with this.
In our Wider Curriculum we will look at: continuing our unit on Medieval Britain in History; developing and designing rockets in Design & Technology; and starting our Science unit on life cycles.
Spellings will be handed out on a Friday and tested the following Friday. They include a range of spellings across the Primary Curriculum. Please encourage your child to practise these at home.
Additional Maths and English Homework will also be handed out on a Friday. This is to reinforce classroom learning and provide additional practice for mastering the material. This homework is to be returned to following Thursday. Homework club will operate on Thursday lunchtimes.
PE will take place on Wednesdays (Gymnastics) and Fridays. Please make sure children come to school in the correct kit on these days – Back bottoms, a white top and their school jumper/cardi.
